IMPORTANT: SharePoint and Search Server memory leak workaround
Products Affected: SharePoint Server 2010 and Search Server Express 2010
The pre-beta release of the system has a memory leak in the automatic language detection component used to select the appropriate tokenizers or word breakers. This might manifest itself as the crawl slowing down or hanging or the system running low on memory. If any of the latter problems are encountered, the admin can either restart the search service (every time this happens - it may recur again in time) or turn off language auto-detect. For the RTM version, the problem is fixed; language detection will be turned on upgrade to RTM.
We recommend that all customers turn this off immediately, before running into issues.
Details:
Area: Crawler: search slows down or hangs with continued use
Question/Issue: Search is slowing down or hanging with continued use (or memory is running low), especially after crawling stops and starts again (e.g. during incremental crawling). If language auto-detection has been turned on (it is off by default), this may be due to a memory leak in the language detector called by the crawler.
Answer/Workaround: Turn off automatic language detection or restart the search service as required (see below). Turning off detection will stop some documents being retrieved, especially html, msg and txt files where the language is not marked internally.
To turn off language detection, set the following to 0
